Naomi Visser has qualified for no fewer than three finals at the World Gymnastics Championships in Liverpool. The 21-year-old Papendrechtse qualified – as he did at the European Championships in Munich – for the bridge, floor and all-around finals.
It is the first time since the 2001 World Championships that a Dutch gymnast has qualified for three individual World Cup finals. At that time, Verona van de Leur reached three individual finals (all-around, bridge, floor).
In the bridge final in Liverpool, Visser also meets compatriot Sanna Veerman, who with 14.533 points in qualifying was just better than Visser (14.533) and finished sixth.
In 2001, two Dutch gymnasts were last in a World Cup bridge final. At that time these were Van de Leur and Renske Endel. The last two Dutch gymnasts were in a World Cup final in 2015: Sanne Wevers was second on beam and Eythora Thorsdottir eighth.
The best result on bridge was achieved by Luo Rui from China (14,900 points), followed by Olympic bridge champion Nina Derwael from Belgium (14,800).
On floor, Visser (13.666) was sixth and her all-around score of 54.165 earned her entry to the all-around final in ninth place overall. Last year Visser finished fifth at the World Championships.
Tisha Volleman (nineteenth with 52,333) can also prepare for the all-around final. The Brazilian Rebeca Andrade was the strongest in the all-around with 57,332 points.
Visser has been training with Vincent Wevers, the father of Olympic champion Lieke Wevers and top gymnast Sanne Wevers, since 2017. Wevers fell into disrepute in the summer of 2020 for illegal and illegal behavior and was suspended by the KNGU gymnastics association, but was acquitted by the disciplinary committee of the Institute for Sports Law (ISR) in early May.
Before the World Cup, Naomi Visser talked about her preparation in Varsseveld with coach Wevers.
In the Nations Cup, the Orange team was 0.265 short of a place in the final. Eythora Thorsdottir, Naomi Visser, Tisha Volleman, Sanna Veerman and Eve de Ruiter scored a total of 159,396 points. At the European Championships in Munich, the Netherlands took an impressive fourth place in the country final.
In Liverpool, the top eight teams qualify for the country final. The best 24 gymnasts in the all-around advance to the all-around final. The top eight qualify for the apparatus finals. A maximum of two gymnasts per country may compete for all finals.
It’s the Dutch’s turn on Monday.
