Daniil Medvedev seems to be growing into his best form in the closing stages of the tennis season. The Russian won the title at the ATP tournament in Vienna, beating Denis Shapovalov in the final: 4-6, 6-3, 6-2.
The Canadian has had an eventful season, but once again showed the power tennis in the Austrian capital, with which he can make it difficult for everyone. He also started vigorously against Medvedev. “His level may have dropped by only two percent after the first set, but I was able to take advantage of that,” said Medvedev, his fifteenth ATP title and second tournament win in 2022.
“Those are actually the most beautiful victories: you feel that your opponent is playing very well, then all you can really do is keep fighting and hope for a turnaround. And that happened,” said the number four in the world.
Medvedev is still playing the Masters tournament in Paris and the ATP Finals in Turin. The Russian has twice reached the final of the year-end tournament and won the title in 2020.
Félix Auger-Aliassime is well on the way to qualifying for the final as well. He won his third ATP title in a row in Basel. The Canadian beat Holger Rune in the final: 6:3, 7:5.
Auger-Aliassime had won just one of their ten finals up until October. However, that month he also received a trophy in Florence and Antwerp. He showed his form again against the young Dane, who won the Stockholm tournament last week.
