Roest Bergsma also beats over 10,000 meters after an exciting fight

After the 5,000 and 1,500 meters, Patrick Roest also won the 10,000 meters at the qualifying tournament for the World Cup circus. In the 10K, as in the 5K, Roest defeated Jorrit Bergsma after an intriguing straight fight.

Roest set a time of 12:52:22 in Thialf, Bergsma clocked a time of 12:53:17. The fastest five skaters qualified for the just 10K at this year’s World Cup competitions in Calgary in December. The other three starting cards went to Mats Stoltenborg, Beau Snellink and Kars Jansman.

Roest took the lead over 5,000 meters on Friday and had to give everything in the closing stages to stay 0.20 seconds ahead of Bergsma. This time Bergsma, six-time national champion, three-time world champion and one-time Olympic champion made the difference over the longest distance.

Roest looked defeated, but in the last two laps he turned a 0.95 lead from a 1.64 deficit with a furious final sprint. Roest’s final lap was a 27.93 and that was the fastest lap ever on a 10,000 meter.

“Together we made it a spectacle again,” said winner Roest after the race. “I tried to drive carefully because a place in the top five would be enough. But if I left at the end and Bergsma was around, I could race. So I then started the full final sprint.”

And Bergsma noticed that, who, like in the 5 kilometers, had to be content with second place.

“At one point I thought: This hole is safe. Patrick was on the rack and has plenty left to punch this out. It’s close together so it promises to be a big fight for the rest of the racing season.” ‘ Bergma said.

We’re far from done skating, this is today’s skating program, watched live on the NOS:
