Swimmer Katie Ledecky broke the world record in the 1,500 meters at the Short Track World Championships in Toronto. The American recorded 08/15/24 and was thus almost ten seconds faster than the German Sarah Wellbrock (18/15/01) in 2019.
Ledecky, 25, who has won seven Olympic gold medals, was in a league of his own in Toronto. As number two, the Brazilian Beatriz Dizoti was no less than forty seconds slower.
It was Ledecky’s first competitive swim for 1,500 meters in a 25 meter pool. Olympic-level swimming is in a 50-meter pool. She is the reigning Olympic and world champion over 1,500 meters on the long track.
Ledecky lost 0.08 last Friday in the 400 meter freestyle to sixteen-year-old Summer McIntosh (3.52.80) of Canada. Both swam very hard, each for the second and third time ever at this distance on a short course.
Earlier this week China’s Li Bingjie broke the world record in the 400-meter short course with a time of 3:51:30 while competing in his own country.
