Phillies surprisingly leads in the World Series against Astros

The Philadelphia Phillies surprisingly won the first game of the World Series against the Houston Astros. The home team quickly took a 5-0 lead, but the Phillies came close and in overtime the visitors won 5-6.

Beforehand, Houston was the clear favorite for the final series of the playoffs, in which it is determined in a maximum of seven games who can call themselves American baseball champions. The team has appeared in four of the last six World Series — culminating in the title only in 2017 — and is undefeated in this season’s playoffs.

The Phillies getting to the World Series came as a surprise. After a bad start to the season, manager Joe Girardi was fired and Dutchman Didi Gregorius also had to leave Philadelphia early. Nevertheless, the team reached the playoffs and finally their final, the World Series, via a wildcard.

In the opening game of the World Series, the Astros more than lived up to their role as favorites. After three innings, the team was leading 5-0. That was largely thanks to Kyle Tucker with two home runs and four runs hit.

In the fourth and fifth innings, Philadelphia equalized again as JT Realmuto and Alec Bohm each brought two teammates over home plate. Neither team scored more runs in the remaining four regular innings.

  • Astros pitcher Verlander ran into big problems in the fourth inning
  • Party in the Phillies after the surprising victory over the Astros

In the tenth inning, the first of overtime, Realmuto hit again for Philadelphia with a home run. In the tie at bat, the Astros got second and third base, but the home team failed to capitalize on those opportunities.

Deja vu Dusty Baker

It’s the first time since 2002 that a 5-0 deficit in the World Series has been converted into a win. That’s what the Anaheim Angels did against the San Francisco Giants, then coached by current Astros manager Dusty Baker.

Now it’s happening to Baker again. The 73-year-old baseball legend has a tremendous track record as a player and coach, but winning the Worlds Series is still missing from his roll of honor. After losing their opening game to the Phillies, the Astros have six games left to give their manager the jackpot of American baseball. The second game is back in Houston the next night.
