Jannik Sinner (22) is currently the benchmark in men’s tennis. After his sensational victory at the Australian Open in January, the Italian also dominated the ATP 1000 tournament in Miami, winning the tournament.
Sinner has now overtaken Spanish youngster Carlos Alcaraz (20) in the ATP world rankings and has risen to second place. But that’s not all, the South Tyrolean is now looking at the best in the world and is really putting pressure on the current world number 1, Novak Djokovic (36).
The Serbian currently has a lead of 1,015 points over his 14-year-younger competitor. But the coming months speak more in Sinner’s favor, even though the clay season and with it the Italian’s weakest base – he has only won one tournament on clay – is coming.
The reason for this is the points that need to be defended. Because Djokovic scored more points than Sinner at the upcoming tournaments last year, he now has to defend more.
Roland Garros serves as an example. Because Djokovic won the tournament in Paris last season, he has 2,000 points to defend this year. For Sinner, who already failed in the second round in 2023, there are only 45.
This is how the math games begin. Until Roland Garros (May 26 to June 9), Djokovic has a total of 2,315 points to defend, while Sinner only has 585 points. If you completely subtract the points to defend, Sinner would currently have 715 points more than Djokovic. It is unlikely that the two will win a single point for the entire clay-court season until after the French Open.
Theoretically, Jannik Sinner could overtake the Serbian before Roland Garros. To do this, he would have to score significantly more points than the 24-time Grand Slam winner at the next three ATP Masters tournaments in Monte Carlo, Rome and Madrid. Since all three tournaments take place on clay, this is quite unlikely.
Sinner has already overtaken Djokovic in one category. In the “Race to Olympics Games”, the qualifying classification for the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, Sinner leads with 8,125 points to Djokovic’s 7,410. The points after the French Open 2023 up to and including the French Open 2024 will be counted in the rankings, the best 56 will be eligible.
