“My goal is the European Championship”: Sierro does not plan any holidays in the summer

Vincent Sierro was called up to the national team for the first time in March. Will he jump on the European Championship bandwagon just in time?
Tim Guillemin

Vincent Sierro was decisive in Toulouse’s 3-0 win at bottom team Clermont on Sunday. He made it 1-0 with a penalty kick and made it 3-0 with an accurate shot in the corner.

Sierro has been quietly and calmly pulling the strings in Toulouse’s midfield this season – even if he criticizes himself for losing the ball after the match. As fans celebrate their captain and cheer on another move to stay in the competition, the neo-national player takes time to reflect on an eventful week.

Blick: What a special week! Her first international match for the senior national team was followed by her first brace-in France.
Vincent Sierra: She certainly was! Representing the colors of my country has always been both a goal and a dream for me. I have worked hard for this and will continue to do so. I was happy to see my teammates again in Toulouse after the international matches. Contributing to the win with two goals makes it even better!

Relegation is getting closer.
We now have 32 points. I think it would take about 38 to stay in the league. So we still need something countable from the last seven games. If we deliver our performance from the first to the last minute, we will receive a reward in the form of points.

And what do you think of your first double pack?
Of course I didn’t do it all alone (laughs). The first goal was a penalty that was cleverly won. And the 3-0 is a beautiful goal in its construction, with a perfect final pass to me. I’m happy that I scored, but it was mainly teamwork, like the 2-0 win.

You are known for your ability to score from set pieces. Are you now starting to score regularly from the game?
When we play in a 3-4-3, I am the highest midfielder – today the coach even specifically asked for that. This offers opportunities to create opportunities in attack. I feel comfortable in this team and this system, which offers me attacking freedom. Hopefully it stays that way.

Sierro scores with a precise finish to make it 3-0 for Toulouse.

Murat Yakin was happy with their performance after the match against Ireland. Did he tell you that too?
Yes. He told me he was happy with the intensity and the face I showed during the training. And I think he was happy with the game too. Now it is up to me to increase my chances of reaching the European Championship with good performances until the end of the season.

From the first days in La Manga you felt like you were at home. Is it really so? easy to integrate into the Swiss national team, as they say?
Honestly, yes. The more experienced players supported me from the start. I already knew many players and was helped with those I didn’t know yet. The match in Ireland was a lot of fun, I had a lot of ball contact and there was good communication on the field. I must say that it was quite easy to integrate into this team.

Have you already canceled your holiday plans for June and July?
I have no vacations planned. The goal in my head is clearly the European Championship. To achieve this, I will work hard and not think about holidays.
