Lucerne’s late goal to equalize 1-1 feels like a defeat for FC St. Gallen. Instead of expanding their lead in the line battle over the Central Swiss team to six points, they are still “only” three points ahead of Lucerne. Accordingly, the FCSG kickers sneak into the locker room after the match with their heads hanging. You can see from the team that the liberation they had hoped for has once again failed.
Because the bad points result after the winter break is in the minds of the players. This is also confirmed by Albert Vallci (28), who scored 1-0 against Lucerne and played a very strong match. “The late goal somehow fits into our matches after the winter break. We won the game in the first half of the season. Honestly, it’s in people’s heads now, it’s a mental story. We have to get through this together as a team. A win would definitely help your head.
What is particularly worrying for St. Gallen is the loss of strength at home. There were 27 points from the first nine home games of this season from July to December, and only a paltry five points from the six home games in the calendar year 2024. And because things are not going so well away from home (four points from five games), St. Gallen threatens to give up the place in the Championship group that they already considered safe. Because the much-vaunted momentum is not on the FCSG side.
Nevertheless, Vallci is optimistic about the last four matches before the division of the competition. “Despite the disappointment, we must take the positive points from the match against Lucerne. There are still four games to go and every point is important. And if we continue to perform as we did for most of the match against Lucerne, we will stay ahead.”
But what is the positive thing that the Austrian discusses? “We created a lot of chances and played a good match. The performance itself, compared to our previous performances after the winter break, was bolder and more confident. It may sound stupid after the 1-1 draw, because only one point was achieved. Therefore, we should not glorify the improvements under any circumstances.”
The aspens don’t have much time to be disappointed anyway. Because it will take place on Thursday evening (8.30 pm) at Lausanne-Sport. “We missed a big point against Lucerne, but we are still three points ahead. Now we play on the artificial grass in Lausanne, where we got off to a good start after the winter break (1-0 win, editors).” FCSG coach Peter Zeidler (61) is already looking forward to his team’s next performance in Romandie .
