Star goalkeeper coach at work: Angerer cancels her holiday plans for the national team

The drizzle and cool spring temperatures don’t seem to bother Nadine Angerer (45) at all. Half an hour before the training, the German state starts on the lawn of the sports hall in Freienbach and prepares its first exercises as the new national coach.

Angerer could be comfortable somewhere in the sun. After ten years in the US, the 2013 world footballer actually wanted to take a break from football for a few months. «But then Pia called me. And you can’t say no to a trainer like that,” says Angerer.

Peng: “She was my idol”

Instead of going on holiday, the five-time European champion will now make the goalkeepers of our national team fit for the European Championship at home. “I see good basic requirements and a lot of potential,” said Angerer about her new protégés Livia Peng (24), Elvira Herzog (24) and Nadine Böhi (20). She already knows exactly where she wants to use the leverage: “I still see weaknesses in women’s football when it comes to crosses and headers,” Angerer explains. “I want to work on that.”

Nati goalkeeper Peng can hardly wait to get started with the former world-class goalkeeper. “As a child she was an idol for me,” said the Bremen goalkeeper. “I hope I can benefit as much as possible from their experience.” Peng will compete with Leipzig goalkeeper Herzog in the coming months for the position of the Swiss number one.

Angerer has already played twice with Crnogorcevic

Under Angerer, the race for a permanent spot at the European Championships starts from scratch at home. “Of course I watched scenes from the last matches,” says the goalkeeper coach. “But I actually want to start my work as unbiased as possible.” The first days of training are therefore mainly about getting to know each other.

Unlike her goalkeepers, Angerer already knows the other Nati members very well. She has been in contact with Pia Sundhage (64) for years; she played under assistant coach Anders Johansson (57) at the Swedish club Djurgarden in 2008 when he was head coach there. Angerer has the closest bond with a national team player: she was on the field with Ana Maria Crnogorcevic (33) in Frankfurt and Portland. And now also in Freienbach.
