On Easter Monday, Liberty Media, the company that owns Formula 1, announced that it is acquiring a large part of the MotoGP owners (Dorna Sports) for $4.2 billion. The Spanish company, which manages the motorcycle series (including the Superbike World Championships), will continue to operate independently, but is now part of the American media company.
“We are very pleased to expand our portfolio of industry-leading live sports and entertainment offerings with the acquisition of MotoGP,” said Greg Maffai, 63, CEO of Liberty Media, in the statement. Carmelo Ezpeleta (77), who remains head of Dorna Sports, and his management have built a “sports spectacle that can now be brought to a wider audience worldwide”.
Ezpeleta also welcomes the majority takeover: “This is the perfect next step in the development of MotoGP.” This deal is a testament to the potential behind the sport. “With Liberty Media, we couldn’t ask for a better partner to grow the MotoGP fan base around the world.”
The transaction is expected to close by the end of 2024. Until then, some legal steps will follow and the company will pass through the hands of various competition authorities. The key question will be whether one company can own the two biggest motorsport series. (che/dub)
