Obscene gesture after yellow-red: ex-FCZ player causes scandal in Austria

This is certainly not how Donis Avdijaj (27) envisioned Easter Sunday. Instead of TSV Hartberg winning the match against Rapid Vienna, which had the same points before kick-off, the six-time Kosovo national player becomes a loser twice. On the one hand because his team had to admit a 3-0 defeat, on the other hand because Avdijaj lost control.

The striker received two fouls within eleven minutes. He received a warning for both and was therefore sent off early in the 88th minute with a yellow-red card. That does not suit Avdijaj, who was under contract with FC Zurich last summer before moving to the Austrian Bundesliga (19 appearances and three goals between August 2022 and August 2023).

Provoked by opponents

He gestures wildly and gets into a heated argument with the referee. When an opponent intervenes, he quickly pushes him away. His teammates try to calm him down, but they can’t. But in the end it’s all pointless. The decision stands, Avdijaj has to leave the field.

He walks towards the dressing room with his head bowed and is accompanied by malicious shouts from the opponents. The Rapid supporters cover him with “goodbye” chants. And that’s the final straw. Avdijaj turns around, shouts something at the audience and provocatively grabs his crotch. With this obscene gesture he causes a scandal.

He is greeted with boos and whistles from the spectators. With this they put an inglorious end to Avdijaj’s failed Easter Sunday. There will be consequences for him not only because of the yellow-red, but also because of the obscene gesture. (beer)
