The case surrounding Inter star Francesco Acerbi (36) has been legally closed. But the discussions are likely to continue. At least that’s what Juan Jesus (32), the alleged victim, hopes. “I hope that this sad event for me can help the entire football world to reflect on such a serious and urgent issue,” said the Napoli player. “It is a decision that I respect, but find it difficult to understand and which makes me very bitter.”
During the Neapolitans’ match against Inter Milan on March 17, Jesus was allegedly insulted by Acerbi. The N-word is said to have been used. The judges explain that there is no evidence for the exact wording.
Initially, Juan Jesus did not want to go into much detail about the incident. “He apologized, he went a little too far with his words. “He’s a good guy,” he said after the game.
Only after Acerbi denied the accusations of racism in the media did the Brazilian respond again: “The apology was the end for me. However, today I read statements that completely contradict the facts.”
The day after the match in question, Acerbi traveled to the Nati in Rome. Italy coach Luciano Spalletti (65) immediately sent him back home – for the atmosphere in the team. During the trip home, Acerbi said of the expulsion: “No racist words ever came out of my mouth. I think he misunderstood me. Many things happen on a football field. It’s normal to say certain things. But then the game is over, you shake hands and everything is forgotten.”
Juan Jesus’ club Napoli announced protest actions after the ruling. People will no longer participate in “purely cosmetic initiatives” against racism coordinated by the association. For example, the club does not want to participate in the anti-racism campaign that will take place on matchday 30 of the Serie A.
