Is Seferovic making his comeback at Nati?: ‘I want to be at least number 2’

80 days before the start of the European Championships in Germany, Murat Yakin (49) sounds the alarm. While the national team found stability defensively in the test matches in Denmark and Ireland, it was extremely difficult offensively. There is a lack of penetration and relief. A classic number 9 is missing, especially because it is expected that Breel Embolo (27) will not make his comeback until April.

“Just hoping for Breel wouldn’t be ideal. We are looking for solutions and have to keep all options open,” says Yakin – and recalls someone he has practically already selected: Haris Seferovic (32). The 2009 U17 world champion was the No. 1 Swiss striker for almost a decade, appearing in five finals. With two goals, he laid the foundation for the historic coup against France at the 2021 European Championship.

Not present since June

A few weeks later, Yakin took over the national team. He indicated early on that he did not trust Seferovic, even when Embolo was injured during the European Championship qualifiers. Seferovic made his last of 93 international matches (25 goals) in June 2023 against Romania (2:2). The Lucerne resident with Bosnian roots then left for the desert, moved to Al-Wasl in Dubai and eventually disappeared from the Nati radar.

Seferovic is surprised when he hears Yakin’s statements. He has had no contact with the national coach in recent months. He does not really believe that he could become a serious option for the European Championship. “My gut feeling tells me that the issue is over,” Seferovic told Blick. “But never say never.” He is physically fit and scores regularly for Al-Wasl: 11 goals in 23 competitive matches. The club from Dubai leads the competition undefeated.

In the top 10 of the Nati best list

Guys like Seferovic are rare. A worker and team player who knows where the goal lies. He also has a lot of international experience – thanks to assignments in Spain, Italy, Germany, Portugal and Turkey. In terms of number of international matches and goals for the national team, he is among the top 10 in history. He rightly says: “I have experienced a lot with the national team and have earned a status within the team.”

The European Championship would have a special attraction for him. He played in Frankfurt for three years and met his wife there. “I would really like to be there in Germany. “Just in terms of atmosphere it would be a great experience,” says Seferovic. But the role of emergency solution is not an option for him. “If I go to the European Championship camp, then I will also go to the European Championship – at least as a number 2 striker.”
