When the seriously injured bobsleigh pusher Sandro Michel (27) talked about everything in detail this week for the first time since the devastating fall in February, the man from Aargau did not mince his words. He made it clear that he was extremely disappointed with both the IBSF world association and the bobsleigh track operators in Altenberg, Germany, over the way they handled the accident.

“As far as I’m concerned, it certainly could have been prevented,” says Michel. “It’s extremely weak that they didn’t address this long ago and, to put it bluntly, simply accepted a death. For me it was relatively close.”

Altenberg denies all blame

What you need to know is that the subject is that bobsleds that have fallen and slid back are restrained by marshals – or, if that’s not possible, that a fallen pusher is protected from impact with mats thrown into the track.

But the railway operators of the Altenberg Ice Canal, which was already considered dangerous, did not want to hear of any complicity immediately after the crash. And now railway boss Jens Morgenstern is hitting back after Michel’s statements against “Bild”.

“We are happy with the current good status of the healing process and wish Sandro Michel a continued good recovery. Despite the tragedy of the events and their consequences, we firmly reject the accusations he has made,” said Morgenstern, adding: “We understand his frustration, but the content and method of distribution go far beyond what is intended .”
