Austria and Germany achieve goals at lightning speed: international action sets a world record

As soon as the whistle blew, the Austrians were already cheering.

Some spectators had not even taken their first sip of beer when Leverkusen high-flyer Florian Wirtz (20) was already cheering in the Groupama Stadium near Lyon. After just seven seconds, the German national team leads against the vice world champions from France. A real lightning goal that actually deserved to be recorded in the history book as the fastest international goal ever. Without a certain Christoph Baumgartner (24).

The Austrian will play against Slovakia in Bratislava the same evening. There the ball starts rolling at 6 p.m., unlike the match in France three hours later. And in Bratislava, Leipzig professional Baumgartner scored after just six seconds, making him one second faster than Wirtz.

Belgian professional dethroned

Baumgartner breaks the world record with his goal. Belgian Christian Benteke (33) previously held this quality mark. The striker scored against Gibraltar after just eight seconds in 2016.

Baumgartner and Wirtz’s goals were not only quick, but also worth watching. Toni Kroos has his foot in the game when Wirtz strikes. The Real professional made his comeback for the national team against France and scored the quick goal with his first pass.

Dream solo and world record

Baumgartner, on the other hand, storms out of the center circle, leaves three Slovaks standing and shoots wonderfully into the far corner from distance. This is something to be proud of!

By the way: the fastest Swiss goal was a while ago and cannot quite keep up with Saturday’s lightning goals. On September 21, 1988, Alain Sutter scored against Luxembourg after just 22 seconds. The then twenty-year-old Sutter scored after a shot by Türkyilmaz and Switzerland won the match 4-1.
