Van Nistelrooij proud after defeating Premier League leaders: “The second half surprised me”

Delighted with Van Nistelrooij: “Definitely a wonderful play-off”

PSV manager Ruud van Nistelrooij can’t believe his luck after his side’s superb win over Premier League leaders Arsenal. “2-0 at home against Arsenal, it’s great that we did that.” PSV won thanks to goals from Joey Veerman and Luuk de Jong.

Thanks to the win, PSV will continue to play in the Europa League after the World Cup, thanks in part to a Bodø/Glimt defeat at FC Zurich. It adds extra sparkle to an evening that was already memorable for Van Nistelrooij. The coach also sees the win as a possible turning point in Eindhoven’s changeable season.

“That’s very important, it creates trust in the team and moments of success also mean that you grow as a team. That you win yourself and the other result is good is twice as big. Then you celebrate the winter rightly, and then you know that you have a wonderful play-off against number three in a Champions League group anyway.”

Even after the unnecessary 4-2 defeat at FC Groningen last Sunday, a moment of success was needed. PSV started the game with little confidence, even after last week’s 1-0 defeat by Arsenal.

“The second half surprised me”

Van Nistelrooij: “It looked easy in the second half, but not at all in the first. I saw how the energy tank was quickly empty. Because we had to chase the ball so much and put so much energy into it to get Arsenal off the ball. to get.”

Ruud van Nistelrooij is happy about his team’s victory

“Fortunately things went differently in the second half and we were able to put more pressure on them. We were therefore much more dangerous on the ball. We gave little away and created by far the most chances.”

The coach admits he didn’t see it coming. “The second half surprised me, of course. But it’s deserved, we forced it ourselves.”
