Mario Gavranovic (34) resigns. Far away from all the hustle and bustle. As the Spain national team prepares for the test matches, the last great bomber from Ticino invites you to a press conference in Mendrisio and announces the end of his career.

“I have repeatedly rejected questions from the media in recent weeks and months. “But now the time has come to officially announce my resignation,” “Gavra-Goal” begins the hour-long media round. He made this decision last summer.

“I will not sell myself short”

There are reasons why Gavranovic delayed the announcement for so long. “It was a difficult time.” On the one hand, there is the terrible ending in Turkey, where after the severe earthquake he just wanted to get away from Kayseri, and on the other hand, and even more importantly, the divorce from his wife. “We have a daughter together and because she went to kindergarten in the summer, I wanted to be with her. She is the most important person in my life,” he says.

European Championship hero against France, now still in the first division

Gavranovic is proud of his career. He doesn’t struggle with what could have been. “You deserve what you achieve.” And he has achieved a lot. His goals speak for him. He scored about 200. He scored 16 goals in 41 games for the national team. A quota that many people dream of. “And yet everyone always talks about that one goal,” he says with a wink.

Correct. Gavranovic will forever be remembered for his goal against France in the 2021 European Championship round. Shortly before the final whistle of regular time, he sent Switzerland into extra time with the score 3-3. In the subsequent penalty shootout, Nati goalkeeper Yann Sommer became a great hero with his heroic progress. “It was definitely the most emotional match of my entire career. It didn’t just mean a lot to me,” he recalls.

Now Gavranovic says “arrivederci”. Since this winter he has been helping with the first division club Mendrisio, which is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year. But it will definitely be over by summer. He later flirted with the coaching company. «I started with the first courses. But my priority right now is my daughter. And after many years outside Ticino, I am happy to be here again.”
