Will there be more crystal balls coming soon? Lara Gut-Behrami is ready to defend her lead in the Super-G and downhill.

She has won two crystal balls and has two more to go. But what will Lara Gut-Behrami (32) do to consolidate her lead in Super-G (68 points) and Downhill (69 points)? The Ticino native gave her answer after her first downhill training: “I won’t give tactics anymore, I’ll give full throttle.”

What Gut-Behrami is referring to is clear: in Sunday’s giant slalom she avoided any risk to defend her pole position. With success: 10th place was more than enough. There was a bit of frustration mixed with the satisfaction. Why? «Because I had to drive tactically. But actually I can’t and don’t want to. “Those were the two worst runs of the winter,” she said. Ultimately, she was 3.22 seconds behind winner Federica Brignone (34, It).

“Stand off the line every now and then”

Gut-Behrami cannot afford such a package in both the Super-G (Friday) and the downhill (Saturday). Because behind her are two Austrians: Cornelia Hütter (31) and Stefanie Venier (30).

Hütter is especially happy after the first training, she comes third (+0.50 second). “The route suits me,” she says. Gut-Behrami, on the other hand, finishes in 18th place (+2.35). However, this is not a cause for Swiss concern. “I was sometimes next to the line. But overall it was okay,” she says.

Voltage drop? Gut-Behrami says no

Could there be a drop in tension at Gut-Behrami after the ball celebration? She was home and out for a few days. And waves it away: “I know when I can relax – then I make time for it. But when it’s time to accelerate again, I’ll be ready.”

However, it may happen that Gut-Behrami does not have to press the accelerator at all. That would be the case if both races were canceled. “I am optimistic about the Super-G,” says Michelle Gisin (30), despite the spring-like temperatures. “Apart from the racing track, you spend more time surfing than skiing on the soft, wet snow. But the track itself was surprisingly good.”

Gut-Behrami thinks the same way. “It was raining and it was so hot. It’s admirable that you were able to get an education at all.” Will there be another one? This is highly unlikely, as Peter is expected to report rain on Thursday – the organizers face a herculean task.

One thing is certain: Joana Hählen (32) will not participate in any races. The Bernese woman will join the tour on Tuesday – but only to get an idea of the new World Cup route. “My knee is getting better, but not good enough yet,” she says.
