Athletes from Russia and Belarus will not be allowed to take part in the athletes’ parade at the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games on July 26 in Paris, but they should have the opportunity to witness the ceremony. The head of the International Olympic Committee took this decision on Tuesday after talks in Lausanne against the backdrop of Russia’s war of aggression in Ukraine. A decision on participation in the closing ceremony on August 11 will follow later.

Teams completely excluded

At both the Olympic Games and the Paralympic Games, starters from Russia and Belarus are only admitted to the competitions under certain conditions. They must compete under a neutral flag, their national anthems are not allowed to be played and they are prohibited from wearing or displaying national symbols at Olympic venues. In addition, the medals won are not listed in the medal table. Teams are completely excluded.
