Swede suffers from a brain disease: national player can no longer speak or move

A month ago, Swedish footballer Kristoffer Olsson (28) suddenly collapsed at home. He is taken to hospital and has to be artificially ventilated. “Kristoffer Olsson apparently suffers from an acute brain disease that cannot be attributed to self-harm or external factors,” his club, Danish super-league club FC Midtjylland, said at the time.

There were major concerns about the Arsenal-trained midfielder, who has been playing in Denmark since last summer. The club is now providing an update on his condition. On his homepage he announces that Olsson no longer needs artificial ventilation. He was also transferred to a neuroclinic for further treatment. He is cared for by experts specialized in advanced rehabilitation of neurological disorders.

Still a long way to go

In addition to the positive news, the 47-time Swedish international’s club also revealed shocking details about his condition. “Unfortunately, Kristoffer has not yet regained his motor and language skills,” the statement said. He cannot move or talk and still has a long way to go.

“The specialists assume that the rehabilitation phase will last several months,” writes FC Midtjylland. Further examinations and treatments are needed and therefore it is still too early for a definitive prognosis.
