Anyone who thought that the coaching change at YB was enough turned out to be wrong sooner than the Bernese would have liked. After the 5:1 against FC Basel – exactly the right opponent to create a coaching effect, arch-rivals and currently very weak – follows the sobering 0:2 in Lausanne.

Why? Because the problem wasn’t Raphael Wicky. There were strategic mistakes made earlier that had not been seen at YB for years, apart from the choice of David Wagner as coach in 2021.

The YB leadership underestimated the winter departure

First of all, Jean-Pierre Nsame should never have been let go. The striker has been absent since January 26. That’s seven weeks. And he’s still YB’s top scorer. His goals are missing everywhere. He scored nine times as a substitute…

But the transfer of wing king Ulisses Garcia to Marseille also cost YB a lot more content than expected. And even though that sounds almost paradoxical: Donat Rrudhani should not have moved to Lausanne. Of course he played very little. But in the games before his departure he showed that he could make a difference. And that he has a very high quality when it comes to standing balls. It is bad luck that Loris Benito, clearly the most consistent central defender this season, was seriously injured, but it fits in well with this overall picture.

And because the YB substitute bench is no longer above average as it used to be, Servette could well win the title.

Servette becomes champion – or will Lugano storm in?

The people of Geneva are bursting with self-confidence. Europe was a source of youth for her. It’s just that the effect has worn off a bit lately, so it’s good for them to have that behind them now. The only question that arises at my former club is: what effect does the position of co-leader have on the players’ minds? Does it cause stress? I would understand. Or is energy released? For this reason and because Servette does not have Joël Magnin, but rather an experienced coach in René Weiler who even manages to win titles in a bigger football country than Switzerland, I believe in Servette as a champion.

Unless… Lugano charges from behind. 12 points from the last four games. What if this continues? Lugano has a high quality selection, a strong bench – and makes the freshest impression. Because many players have recently returned from injuries. And Lugano only plays against the tail clubs. I therefore warn: Beware of FC Lugano!
