He was no longer good enough for Kloten: the crazy story of SCB rescuer Kindschi

Suddenly defender Simon Kindschi (27) appears in front of Zug goalkeeper Leonardo Genoni. The SCB defender shoots and the slightly deflected puck ends up in the goal. It is the saving 3:3 equalizer. And thanks to Scherwey’s goal, the Berners win after being 3-1 down and are 1-0 ahead in the quarter-finals.

Now Kindschi is not someone who invented goal scoring. He had gone 202 NL games without scoring before scoring again for the first time just over three weeks ago – also in an important win for SCB in Zug. “Even a blind chicken can find a grain,” he said into the MySports microphone at the time. This time he no longer has any bold statements up his sleeve. “Luckily he fell in,” he says, laughing. “That was very important.”

Sometimes the Davos native has to pinch himself. He played for Kloten until shortly before Christmas. A club that fought against relegation before it became clear that relegation was out of the question this season because there were no more candidates for promotion from the Swiss League. Kindschi played only rarely for the Airport Town team, where he had sometimes captained in the Swiss League. Unless he had a surplus, he usually only got small doses of ice time.

Some people wondered: how can someone who is not enough for Kloten be able to help the SCB?

“A lot depends on whether a coach trusts you”

Kindschi was helped by the fact that he fit exactly into the defender profile that SCB coach Tapola wanted: tall (1.92m) and not too interested in attacking play. “I got this opportunity and was able to show what I can do,” Kindschi said. “The first matches went very well, then you get more self-confidence and you can play more again.”

How did the man who became champion with his parent club HCD as an 18-year-old under Del Curto in 2015, slip away from the team in Kloten? “I don’t know if it took me a little longer to get used to playing in the National League again after promotion. And that continued. A lot depends on whether a coach trusts you or not.”

In the Swiss League, Kindschi had become accustomed to a style with which he would now have no chance even under Tapola: he took part in the attacking game and once scored 40 points (and 7 goals) and in the year of promotion he scored 35 points. (9). In the closing stages in Zug, when SCB had to take risks, he rediscovered his forward momentum.

“I do my best every day and then we’ll see what happens,” says Kindschi. SCB quickly signed a contract for next season.

Kindschi is not the only defensive specialist to score for SCB in Zug. The 1-0 score goes to the Swedish bouncer Patrik Nemeth. “Every now and then we get a shot and the puck ends up in the goal,” Kindschi said. “If it is so this time, we will take it all the better.”
