Surprisingly, Scheffler again had the upper hand. Certainly, the 27-year-old from New Jersey is currently dominating the PGA Tour – especially since John Rahm moved to LIV competition. Scheffler won his last tournament (Arnold Palmer Invitational) by five shots. But at the Players Championship he suffered from neck problems from the second round. “But I fought through it for three days,” Scheffler said. “That is it.”
Scheffler’s swing was affected. He failed to achieve the usual distances off the tee. He had to rely on his good hands. The fact that despite the handicap he won the tournament with a one-stroke lead over Wyndham Clark, Brian Harman and Xander Schauffele underlines how athletic, mentally strong and creative Scheffler plays.
Scheffler even set a record on the way to the first successful defense of his title at this tournament in half a century: he equalized the course record with 64 strokes in the final round and won the tournament after being five strokes behind. (SDA)
