After 8 games there was nothing left to say: Servette has overtaken YB in the Super League

At Servette, no one uses the M-word. Although since Sunday evening they have the same number of points as YB and share the lead with the Berners. At least in public, Genevans are subdued. Internally, one or the other is probably dreaming of a very big coup. Justifiably!

The Servette desire holds us captive again

Servette is the benchmark of everything in Super League at the moment. That’s what the numbers say. And as we all know, they rarely, if ever, lie. But the road to get there was rocky. One only remembers the failed start to the season. There were only seven points from the first eight games (1 win, 4 draws and 3 defeats). There were already initial reports that coach René Weiler (50) had failed.

The diesel engine of the competition

But luckily for the Grenats, Weiler stayed. Because what followed is an unprecedented race to catch up. Since matchday 9, Servette has collected 47 points. Ten points more than YB. A huge difference, which strangely enough is not reflected in the goal statistics. During this period the two teams scored a similar number of goals (Servette: 40, YB: 39) and conceded exactly the same number (18).

But what are the reasons for Geneva’s strong comeback? The physical condition of the team offers a solution. If you look at the course of the season, Servette behaves like a diesel engine: the longer it runs, the better it gets going. In almost all matches, the Weiler boys are superior to their opponents with their running, their attacking runs and their intensity. This is even more important when you consider that they have already played 46 matches – four more than YB.

Take a breather before the final sprint

Then there is the case of Chris Bedia (28). When the Ivorian’s departure to the Bundesliga was certain, many thought Servette would no longer be able to score goals. But the opposite is the case. While Geneva scored 1.7 goals per game in the first 19 games with Bedia, the figure since the second half of the season without him has been two goals per game. So they understood how to replace their most successful goalscorer with the collective.

But now comes the hard part for Servette. Because they now have something to lose in the remaining ten league games. The Nati break comes at just the right time. It gives them the opportunity to rest for a while before the final sprint. Goalkeeper Joël Mall (32) also sees it that way. “Now we can put our feet up for two to three days. And enjoy that there are no competitions now.” Then it’s about attacking again to bring the first championship title in 25 years to Lake Geneva.
