Carlos Alcaraz defends his title in Indian Wells.

A day after the semi-final victory over Jannik Sinner, Carlos Alcaraz (20), just like last year, defeated Daniil Medvedev in the final 7:6 (7:5), 6:1. “Before the tournament I had doubts,” Alcaraz admits, “I wasn’t sure if I would play at my best level. There was the uncertainty about the (previously injured) ankle and the knowledge that I had not been playing well lately. But ultimately, when I was on the field, I felt better and better after every game.”

Carlos Alcaraz injured his right ankle three weeks ago in Rio. The young Spaniard was eliminated in the quarter-finals of the Australian Open; At the ATP 250 tournament in Buenos Aires he failed in the semi-finals as the big favorite. “Those were difficult moments. Winning again in Indian Wells was very important. Especially for my head.”

Alcaraz wins his 13th title, fifth at a Masters 1000 tournament. He is now considered the favorite for the Masters 1000 tournament starting this week in Miami.

Medvedev angry

Meanwhile, loser Medvedev will miss out on completing his collection of Masters titles on hard courts in Indian Wells. He won the other five tournaments (Miami, Toronto/Montreal, Cincinnati, Shanghai, Paris-Bercy) at least once.

The Russian again collided with referee Mohamed Lahyani in the tiebreak of the first set. He wants to see a tight ball again after a point, but according to Lahyani that is not possible. Medvedev: “It’s the year 2024, we’re sending damn spaceships off the planet and we can’t see the markings on a ball? Tennis is a rotten sport.” (SDA/cmü)
