Just like last year in Indian Wells, Carlos Alcaraz and Daniil Medvedev will play in the final for the tournament victory. The Spanish defending champions inflicted their first defeat of the season on Jannik Sinner in the semi-finals, Medvedev defeated Tommy Paul.
Alcaraz had to deal with a stoppage due to a swarm of bees in the quarter-final against Alexander Zverev. This time it is the rain that causes a three-hour break early in the semi-finals, but cannot significantly disrupt the second place in the world rankings. After a difficult start and just over two hours of play he won 1:6, 6:3, 6:2.
For Sinner it is the first defeat this year after he won the title at the Australian Open and in Rotterdam. The third on the ATP rankings managed to string together sixteen victories before losing on Saturday.
Sinner’s last opponent at the Australian Open, Daniil Medvedev (ATP 4), won in the other semi-final with 1:6, 7:6 (7:3), 6:2 against the American Tommy Paul (ATP 17). The local man sprained his ankle in the tiebreak and no longer looks in top form after treatment on his ankle. A year ago, Alcaraz won the final match against the Russians with 6:3, 6:2. (SDA)
