It remains to be seen whether Ingemar Stenmark’s records will last forever. One thing is certain: they will continue to exist for a while. With the abandonment of the giant slalom in Saalbach, Marco Odermatt lost two records.

On the one hand, he missed the 10th victory in the 10th giant of the season. A feat that only the Swede has achieved so far (1978/79). On the other hand, the winning streak in the giant slalom that Odermatt launched last winter in Kranjska Gora is traveling. After twelve victories in a row, the 26-year-old has to admit defeat again. Stenmark’s fourteen successes in a row (1977/78, 1978/79, 1979/80) remain unparalleled. After all, the Nidwalden resident is in second place on the all-time rankings.

However, in some other areas the competition is far ahead. In some cases this can quickly become the case. Here’s the overview.

Like last year, Odermatt has 13 World Cup victories in one season. He shares the record with Stenmark (1978/79) and the Austrians Hermann Maier (2000/01) and Marcel Hirscher (2017/18). By the way: With 17 victories in the 2018/19 season, the American Mikaela Shiffrin holds the overall record.

For the second time in a row, Odermatt has achieved thirteen World Cup victories in one season – something that has never happened before, not even for women.

In the 2022/23 season, Marco Odermatt set a new points record for men in the overall World Cup. Odermatt collected 2,042 points and overtook Hermann Maier, who had set the previous record with 2,000 points in 1999/2000. It remains to be seen whether Odermatt’s own record will last. He currently has 1902 points. With downhill and super-G next week he can theoretically score 200 points. By the way, Tina Maze has the absolute record. The Slovenian collected 2,414 points in 2013/14.

In 2018, at the Junior World Championships in Davos, Odermatt really wowed the skiing world for the first time. He won in the downhill, super-G, giant slalom, combined and team events – no one has ever won five gold medals in the same event before.

In 2001, Hermann Maier won the overall World Cup with a lead of 743 points. And Odermatt? He is currently ahead of Loïc Meillard with 959 points. With three races to go he is almost certain of the record. The only question is how big the lead will be.

Odermatt has already secured the large crystal ball for winning the overall World Cup and the small one for the Giant Slalom World Cup. The trophies for the discipline rankings in downhill and super-G can be added next week. This would put him on par with his compatriots Pirmin Zurbriggen (1986/87) and Maier (1999/2000 and 2000/01). In the descent, Odermatt is 42 points ahead of the Frenchman Cyprien Sarrazin, and in the Super-G 81 points ahead of the Austrian Vincent Kriechmayr.
