White bands in the landscape, temperatures in double figures, people in T-shirts: winter is saying goodbye to Saalbach-Hinterglemm (Austria). However, Camille Rast has not yet had enough of the white splendor. The 24-year-old wants to crown her strong season in the World Cup final. With the first podium place of her career? This season she finished fourth twice – in slalom, her best discipline. “There was little missing. “But if it doesn’t work now, it will happen later,” she says.

The Valais woman’s calmness is no coincidence. She grew up as an only child in Vétroz USA and learned to fight her way through it. Circus school, junior world champion, glandular fever, depression, cruciate ligament tear – Rast has been through a lot.

Together with Lara Gut-Behrami (32), she is the only top Swiss skier to get through this winter without a fall or injury. “Luckily,” as she says. “You just have to make sure you’re okay. Take a break, sleep, recover – I’ve learned a lot about myself over the years.”

“I think that’s cool”

As deeply relaxed as Rast appears in a conversation, she is just as furious on the slopes. She also indulges her creativity with her helmet designs. She caused a stir at the 2023 World Cup as skier Asterix, and this season a black panther adorns her giant slalom helmet. “The Panther is smooth yet aggressive – that’s how I want to ride,” she says.

Mountains can also be seen on it, as well as shining stars. “They are for my deceased grandparents,” Rast said. And in the slalom? She has a rocket helmet, she wants to be so explosive. Their helmets come from André “Dédé” Marty, who has many top cracks as customers, especially in motorsport.

Rast: “You don’t see us much when we are skiing. The helmet allows us to show something of our character – I think that’s cool. And I think people like it too.”
