The FCSG is in the rain. Seven points from nine games. Even the inferior kickers from Ouchy have collected more points this year than crisis-plagued Eastern Switzerland. But for Peter Zeidler there is no reason to fall into pessimism: “I currently see a rainbow over Abtwil. After rain comes sun,” said the FCSG coach. He sits high on the fifth floor of his office in Kybunpark and analyzes the 2-3 defeat against Lugano. The conclusion was that they wanted to counter-attack after taking the 2-1 lead, but did not defend well enough.
Shortly after half-time, St. Gallen conceded the equalizer after a beautiful combination from Luganesi, but when Bislimi scored the winning goal there was no definitive consistency in the matches. Instead of preventing the solo artist from finishing and kicking the ball away, the green and white defenders can be bent around like slalom poles.
The FCSG coach explains why he took his two best attackers, Willem Geubbels and Julian Von Moos, off the field after more than an hour with the duo’s form. Both are coming back from injuries and are not yet ready to play 90 minutes of strength football.
The same goes for captain Lukas Görtler. He is back in the selection for the first time since early February after his thigh injury, but is initially only on the bench. And he is one of a total of eight players who have been missing from the FCSG in recent weeks. However, Zeidler does not use the green and white hospital as an excuse for the insufficient number of points. “That would not do justice to the players who are on the field,” said the 61-year-old. They are disappointed with the results, but they will not lose their nerve now. ‘We remain calm. And we’re leaving there again. We can classify everything correctly.”
A win against the rankings is a must on Saturday if you don’t want to suddenly slip out of the championship group with six rounds to go. “There is also a lot at stake at GC. It won’t be easy, but it would be good to go into the break for the national team with a positive feeling,” said Zeidler.
After the two-week break, midfielder Jordi Quintilla is expected back, and striker Jovan Milosevic is also on the eve of a comeback. Zeidler must be able to rely on all players in the last five rounds, with the exception of the long-term injured Betim Fazliji (torn cruciate ligament).
All this indicates that the team from St. Gallen will eventually end up in the top six. And the game plan is also positive for the people of eastern Switzerland. At the beginning of this year you had to play Servette and Lugano twice, but now you have to face opponents on an equal footing with GC, Luzern, Lausanne, Yverdon and the FCZ.
