Bare numbers are devastating: is Berner’s concrete football responsible for the rankings crisis?

A reflection of the entire season. In the Winterthur weekend, Berner’s team lost due to a lack of efficiency, as the rankings had more opportunities than the home team. But that is the exception, as shown by the expected goals value (xG value) over the entire season. This quantifies the goals a team should score based on the quality of the chances.

In GC, the xG value according to “FootyStats” is 1.2, which essentially corresponds to the number of goals actually scored. Which in turn means: the rankings are generally efficient, but don’t create many big chances compared to the other teams. Only Yverdon and Lausanne-Ouchy have a lower xG value. Another statistic says that the Zurich team managed to score only more than 10 shots in 33 percent of matches – this value also corresponds to 9th place in the rankings. It is also telling: in Winterthur GC is set up offensively and has a clear plan, as if the goals should fall, but it is not clear.

GC owners want offensive glasses

Is Berner’s defensive football the cause of the rankings being stuck at the bottom of the table? This is the question the ambitious new club owners from the US ask themselves when it comes to filling the coaching position next season. The Americans have announced that they want to attack the rankings in the top half of the rankings from the summer. With spectacular football, which they will hardly get from Berner.

If the Hoppers remain goalless and pointless against St. Gallen next weekend, a change to the coaching bench is more likely to occur.
