Where is Yusuf Demir (20)? The young Austrian played just 55 minutes for FCB this year, the last of which was in early February. For four games there has been no trace of the attacking player in Fabio Celestini’s (48) selection.
The Galatasaray loan plays only a minor role in Celestini’s plans. And that even though the FCB coach only had words of praise for Demir. “I have seen a lot of positive things from him in the past two weeks. His attitude is good and he is training well,” said Celestini.
However, Demir is still not playing – unlike at the start of the season. The summer newcomer is placed under his predecessor Timo Schultz (46) and he also always plays under Heiko Vogel (48).
But shortly after Celestini took office, Demir was injured and missed the start of winter preparation. Competitors, such as homegrown player Roméo Beney (19), took advantage of their opportunity and overtook the Austrian.
Almost three years ago it seemed unthinkable that Demir would be alone in the stands at a club like Basel. In the summer of 2021, the super talent from Rapid Vienna will be loaned to the great FC Barcelona. He was actually in the second team for the Catalans, but thanks to a strong preparation he made the jump to the pros.
Demir also comes there regularly. Highlight: he is in the starting line-up in the Champions League group match against Benfica (0-0). But because there would be a purchase obligation of 10 million francs from the tenth use, the Barcelona adventure ends after nine games.
Demir will move back to Vienna in the summer of 2022 and from there to Galatasaray Istanbul for a transfer fee of six million francs. In his first season, the U21 international only made six appearances; thigh and knee problems continued to hold him back.
Demir also has to contend with this in Basel. Because he suffered a blow to the knee during training this week, he will not be available against YB on Sunday. Whether Celestini would have even made plans with the Viennese is another matter.
