No winner, no loser: an ode to the draw in sports

No one comes first: in the Ticino play-in derby there was a draw for the first time since 2006.

The desire for a decision. It’s almost like obsessive-compulsive disorder and is therefore of course an invention of the totally crazy North Americans.

Even in sports, their militant attitude means that they always have to go to the extreme. Example American football? The Americans invented rugby because they were too bored with rugby. Rugby. Too boring. Only they can do that, everything has to have a Hollywood ending.

A draw is sport for the Americans, but inside out. Why play at all if there is no decision? In football, the regular season tie only remains if nothing happens in overtime. Why extend at all?

Points only in homeopathic doses

The willingness to adopt almost every rule from abroad has led to the introduction of overtime and penalties in ice hockey. As a viewer, after the 50th minute of the match you sometimes have the feeling that you are watching the wrong film, because no one is giving everything. Just to save yourself extra time, where at some point you are satisfied with a draw, so that you can then decide the game using a penalty lottery and get almost the same number of points as a clear winner.

In principle, even a game like a room fight doesn’t have to have a loser at all costs – except of course in knockout games, but that’s different.

The draw is a fair form of distribution of points. Actually, a draw should be good for people’s mental health, because everyone goes home happy one way or another, no one has lost. Football does this really well, there is also the three-point rule, but if you can’t win, you only get the points in homeopathic doses: one.
