After the Olympic Games in Paris: Germany has a new women’s national coach

Former U17 national coach Christian Wück (50) will succeed interim national coach Horst Hrubesch for the German football players after the Olympic Games in the summer. The German Football Association (DFB) announced this on Friday.

Wück led the German U17 team to the World Cup title in Indonesia in December. The 50-year-old has worked as a coach for various youth teams at the DFB since 2012 and his contract as U17 coach expires this summer. Wück has not yet trained a women’s team.

“Christian Wück is a proven expert, he speaks the language of the players,” DFB chairman Bernd Neuendorf emphasized. Wück has proven “that he can develop personalities and form teams into a cohesive unit. I am convinced that he is the right person to lead our team into the future after the Olympic Games.”

Great honor for Wück

Wück himself called it a “great honor” and said he did not hesitate long in submitting the request. “Coaching this team, further developing the existing individual quality of the players and thereby setting the team up for success in the future is one of the most exciting and responsible tasks in German football,” he said.

Hrubesch, who stepped in after the disappointing 2023 World Cup and the divorce from Martina Voss-Tecklenburg, leads the German selection to the Summer Games in Paris. The 72-year-old will also look after the DFB team during qualifying for the 2025 European Championship in Switzerland, which starts in April. (AFP)
