The coaching carousel has been running in Switzerland since this week. YB made it possible. But it’s not just the Bernese who are looking for a coach. There are likely to be several changes in the Super League ahead of the new season. There are countless names floating around. However, no one has ever fallen. That of Boris Smiljanic (47).
Being on the sidelines again is certainly an option for the ex-coach of Aarau and Schaffhausen. Blick reaches him in Marbella, where he owns several properties and regularly spends time with his dogs. “I am open to a new, ambitious project,” says Smiljanic.
Smiljanic doesn’t feel any pressure to earn something as quickly as possible. After successful deals as a crypto entrepreneur, the former GC and FCB star can choose how he spends his time. Yet he is not lazy. “I have a lot of contact with people and visit many teams and training courses to further develop myself.”
Smiljanic also has the best credentials, especially from his time at Aarau. He took over FCA in the middle of a crisis in November 2022, when they were sixth in the table and almost led them to the Super League. His average points from 22 games? 1.77 points. Of all FCA coaches with at least 20 games, only René Weiler (1.8) has collected more points per 90 minutes.
Yet Smiljanic’s adventure in Aarau came to an end last summer. The contract was terminated by mutual agreement. «The infrastructure and the restrictive rules of use have forced the support team to improvise a lot. That took a lot of energy. But the people in and around the club were great. I have fond memories of Aarau. It is a pity that we could not reward our catch-up with promotion,” he reflects.
Since leaving Aarau, Smiljanic has received repeated inquiries from clubs. “Especially from abroad,” he explains. However, it never became concrete. “But I like to sit at the table and listen to the ideas and demands.” So it’s entirely possible that his name will soon appear on the Swiss coaching carousel.
