Everything is OK! Lara Gut-Behrami enjoys a cinnamon roll in Kvitfjell, father Pauli Gut is very proud of his daughter.

At the end of the 1990s, Pauli Gut (66) founded the Sporting Gottardo ski club with his wife Gabriella. Why? Because his ideas no longer coincided with those of SC Airolo.

It was the beginning of the Gut family’s private team; daughter Lara and son Ian were professionally supported from that moment on. A lot has happened since then. And while Ian announced his retirement from top sport almost a year ago, Lara, just under 33 years old, is riding faster than ever. She is about to win the overall World Cup and also leads in three disciplines (downhill, super-G, giant slalom).

What fascinates Pauli most about his daughter? «Your relaxedness. She shows joy, fun and passion in what she does. Everything is right, both with the team and at home.” Gut-Behrami gives exactly this impression in Kvitfjell (No) – and not just because she celebrates her 45th World Cup victory on Sunday.

No, even before the start you see the Ticino woman chatting good-humoredly with the Italian top skiers. “We are very happy that things are going so well. But you should not forget that there is a lot of work and experience behind it,” says Pauli Gut.

If Lara doesn’t want to do it, she won’t do it

In fact, not everyone expected Gut-Behrami to make such an impressive final spurt in her career. Over the past three years, she has closed the last gaps in her record with the 2021 World Championships (giant slalom and super-G) and the 2022 Olympic victory (super-G). And now she is on the brink of her second overall World Cup victory.

“Lara was always there, but the big results came in the last three years,” her father confirms. But where does he see the reasons for the recent success story? His daughter knows very well that she cannot be nice to everyone, says Pauli Gut. Gut-Behrami consistently continues her path: “What she wants, she does and what she doesn’t, she simply doesn’t do.”

“It’s still too early to celebrate”

Then Pauli Gut gets specific. He discusses the fact that Gut-Behrami said goodbye to Instagram, Facebook and Twitter after her marriage to ex-Nati frog Valon Behrami (38). “Since she is no longer on social media, Lara feels better, just free.”

And what would winning the big crystal ball mean? “It would be sensational,” said Pauli Gut. Then he raises his warning finger: “It’s too early to celebrate.”
