“Here we go” – these words are now common knowledge in football around the world. Fabrizio Romano (31) uses X when a footballer is about to make a substitution. The transfer insider, considered well-connected, is often the first to know when big transfers are coming and where the stars are moving. This is exactly why his information is always in high demand.

The Danish sports magazine ‘Tipsbladet’ now accuses the Italian of saying that his reporting is for sale. The reason for the accusations was a tweet about Roony Bardghji (18). Romano reported that the exceptional Swedish talent is currently not getting playing time at FC Copenhagen because he is on the shopping list of several top clubs and therefore does not want to extend his contract, which expires in 2025.

Contributions against payment

Copenhagen denied these accusations to “Tipsbladet,” which used journalist Troels Bager Thogersen as an opportunity to further investigate Fabrizio Romano’s environment. ‘Tipsbladet’ is said to have documents showing that Romano negotiates advertising contracts with football clubs. Romano and a company associated with him are said to have offered advertising contributions to both clubs and consultants in exchange for payments of an undisclosed amount. In return, the 31-year-old would give them attention through his X and Instagram channels, which have a total of 47 million followers.

What is problematic, according to Thogersen, is not only the wide reach of the influential football journalist, but also that the Italian often receives his information from player agents and acts on their behalf and in their interests. This is also evident from the Bardghji case. “In this specific case, it seems that the player and his advisors want to put pressure on FC Copenhagen through Romano’s message,” the Danish journalist explains.

Thorgersen further warns that Romano’s transfer reports should be viewed with caution. Because if clubs and advisors have to pay to be mentioned in transfer news via Italian channels, he is probably acting out of commercial intentions and not out of journalistic interest.

FC Luzern booked Romano for a PR stunt

It is already known that Fabrizio Romano can be booked for video messages via the Cameo platform. For about 130 francs you can order a video in which Romano congratulates him on his birthday or announces a transfer or contract extension.

A Swiss club also made use of this. In September 2023, FC Luzern announced the extension of the partnership with beer sponsor Eichhof. The contract extension with the long-term partner was announced by none other than transfer guru Fabrizio Romano in a video published on the Instagram account of the Lucerne team.

Does Romano also get paid for his famous transfer reports? The Italian has faced similar criticism in the past. ‘I don’t want to sell fake news or dreams, but to explain what is happening in the transfer market. It’s not about me,” Romano denied previous accusations. Romano has not yet responded to the current allegations.
