Sophia Thomalla on the differences between players’ wives in football and tennis: “Some come with a jute bag, others with a clutch”

Sophia Thomalla (34) is one of the best-known faces on German television. The presenter, who is also active as a model, is currently in a relationship with tennis star Alexander Zverev (26). Thomalla knew life as a player well before her time with Zverev; from 2019 to 2021 she turned the head of footballer Loris Karius (30).

On her Instagram account with more than 1.4 million followers, she now explains the big difference between female players in tennis and football. This is reflected in the outfit: “The football players’ wives come to the match with a clutch, the tennis players’ wives come with a jute bag because they have to carry so much stuff.” While a mini handbag is sufficient for football, for tennis you will need a larger fabric bag.

No problem with the expression “gamer’s wife”

Thomalla supports her loved one from the stands as often as possible. Also on the other side of the world: in January she traveled with Zverev to Melbourne for the Australian Open, and suffered first-hand in the dramatic semi-final defeat to Daniil Medvedev (28).

While other partners of athletes don’t like being called players’ wives, Thomalla has no problem with the term. “Why would I have a problem with standing by my partner and supporting him? Whenever possible and appropriate, I like to be a player’s wife,” she explained a few years ago.

On a sporting level, Zverev is doing well, the German is currently ranked sixth in the world. But he still misses his first Grand Slam title, this year he should finally achieve this distinction. One thing is certain: his girlfriend Thomalla stands behind him as great support – with a fully packed burlap bag. (bjl)
