On Saturday, EHC Chur in Langenthal not only secured a place in the semi-finals of the MyHockey League, but also promotion to the Swiss League with a 4-2 victory in front of 1,956 fans. One person who is particularly happy about this is NHL star Nino Niederreiter (31), who works as an advisor and ambassador for his parent club.
Where was he more excited? With his EHC Chur or in his NHL games? “I have more control when I play myself. But of course I followed the EHC Chur matches,” says “El Niño”, who celebrated the return of his heart club with a double in the 5:3 win against Carolina and the next day in the 5:2 against Buffalo he scored his 17th goal of the season “The Chur team has had a very good season, has done an excellent job and the technical staff of the Von Arx brothers is doing very well.”
It is not the first time that the Nati attacker thinks about Swiss ice hockey. Especially for the Swiss League. “It would be very good to introduce a salary ceiling in Switzerland. Whether in the National League or the Swiss League,” he says. “It is important that we have a good second highest division in Swiss ice hockey. This is the stepping stone for the boys who will hopefully one day get the opportunity to play in the National League. At the moment the jump is simply too big because the Swiss League is not strong enough.”
He also has plans to divide the Swiss League into an East and a West group. “It’s about saving costs. That could also be something to consider for the National League. In North America they have solved this very cleverly in the NHL or AHL.
In addition, if the Swiss League has its way, it should have room for veterans who increasingly have to prepare for life after their careers in order to help the youngsters professionally. “My hope and wish is that, for example, players like Leandro Profico (Kloten, editor) or Mauro Jörg (Fribourg, editor) return to Chur.”
Could the top NHL player, who recently extended his contract with the Winnipeg Jets by three years, imagine playing for EHC Chur at the end of his career? ‘That is a very difficult question. I certainly can’t rule it out. But I don’t think so.”
But he doesn’t miss his dedication to his home club. Together with a colleague, Niederreiter invested in EHC Chur and purchased a share package so that young talent can be better supported. He hopes more people will follow his example.
