Eliud Kipchoge, who wants to win his third gold medal in a row at the Olympic marathon in Paris this summer, has suffered a setback at the Tokyo marathon.
Kipchoge had to settle for 10th place in this city race in Japan, one of the six most important marathons in the world. The 39-year-old lost more than four and a half minutes to the winner, his compatriot Benson Kipruto.
“Something happened in the middle of the race,” Kipchoge explained afterwards. After 15 kilometers, while in the lead, he slowed his pace dramatically and allowed all the other top runners to pass. But Kipchoge does not see his goals disappearing yet: “It just can’t be Christmas every day. It’s still too early to say what form I’ll be in at the Paris Games. I’m going to go home now, relax and start training.”
Sutume Asefa Kebede of Ethiopia won the women’s event. Both winners in Tokyo set course records.
There was a Swiss victory among the wheelchair athletes. Manuela Schär from Kriens repeated her victory from last year, but missed her own course record by about three and a half minutes.
