“I can’t remember ever being in such a situation with YB,” says Sandro Lauper (27) after the 1-0 defeat against FCZ. No wonder that when the Bernese team strung together two Super League bankruptcies for the last time in April 2017, Lauper was still playing for his cantonal rivals from Thun. And there is a certain Adi Hütter (54) on the YB sidelines.

With the cup away against Sion (1:2), there have now been three bankruptcies within eight days. “You cannot prevent a phase after six years in which things go less well,” says Lauper. The midfielder cannot deny that the series of defeats has left its mark. “I would be lying if I said we didn’t feel the uncertainty on the pitch. Everyone starts thinking, which makes the actions messier.”

“A Slap in the Face”

Wicky isn’t worried about the future

But why is it that a season that was at least attractive in terms of results seems to slip out of the hands of the Bernese within a few days? “You can look for the reasons, whether there are too many player changes in the team, the tough European matches or the injury list,” says Lauper. All Bern players agree, at least publicly, that the unclear future of coach Raphael Wicky (46) is not the cause of the crisis.

“It has nothing to do with the contract situation,” says Wicky himself, he is not worried about his future. Although he has won a lot with YB in the last twenty months, he has always remained down to earth. “That’s why I won’t fall into depression now,” said the Valais.

Von Bergen promises clarity soon

YB sports director Steve von Bergen (40) spoke before the FCZ match in the Blue interview about the ongoing contract negotiations with his coach. “A lot also depends on how you deal with a situation. Clarity will certainly emerge in the coming days and weeks,” Von Bergen promises.

It is an open secret that the discussions between the YB management and Wicky were about whether the coach would stay in Bern until the summer or beyond. After three bankruptcies in a row, it can no longer be ruled out that neither scenario will become reality.
