Lara Gut-Behrami (32) gives the first interview in the finish area at ORF. Chance? No. Former speedster and cameraman Nicole Schmidhofer (34) lured her with a cinnamon roll. “That’s the only reason I’m here,” the Ticino woman says, laughing. Her good mood does not only come from the Scandinavian sweets she enjoys with her father, Pauli Gut. Of course not.

Shortly before that she came second in the Super-G in Kvitfjell (no). And when the misty caper-filled race was abandoned after 41 riders, one thing was clear: Gut-Behrami was now so clearly in the lead in the Super-G World Cup that he finished eighth at the World Cup Final in Saalbach (Austria). ) meant she could win the Crystal Ball, that’s enough – it would be the fifth of her career. Gut-Behrami, the super-G queen!

“Invoicing takes place in Saalbach”

But that is not everything. Gut-Behrami also leads in the giant slalom and the downhill World Cup. And above all: with the 180 points she collected in Kvitfjell, she consolidates her pole position in the battle for the big crystal ball. “At the finish I of course look at the results and the assessments. But the invoicing only takes place in Saalbach,” says Gut-Behrami.

The fact is: after her 15th podium finish of the season, things would have to go wrong if Gut-Behrami was not chosen as ski queen of the winter. In any case, Federica Brignone shows on this warm Sunday in Kvitfjell that Gut-Behrami can be beaten. The 33-year-old Italian drives a beautiful ride through the fog, she risks everything and is rewarded. “It wasn’t easy, but I have a lot of self-confidence,” she says afterwards. In fact, Brignone has the worst conditions of any top runner, which makes her performance all the more impressive.

Swiss coach stops Austrians

Gut-Behrami can live with second place. «I didn’t feel good on the skis, but I reached the finish healthy. That’s the most important thing.” She doesn’t want to talk about a dangerous race because of poor visibility on the ground, even though everything was on the limit. “The pace was slow – that helped,” she says.

Not only the soft snow is responsible for this, but also the Swiss speed trainer Roland Platzer. He sets the Super-G and shows a golden touch with his course – Platzer contains more turns compared to the previous day and thus slows down the supergliders from Austria.
