It’s November 25, 2023: FCZ defeated YB 3-1 and temporarily dethroned the champions again. It is the highlight of the Henriksen era, much reminiscent of the 2021/2022 season, when the FCZ sensationally stormed to the title under André Breitenreiter.
YB quickly recovered from the blow in the face from FCZ to win the big Champions League home game against Red Star Belgrade 2-0 three days later, ultimately securing their European winter. The Bernese team regains first place in the competition in December.
This Sunday in the FCZ match against YB (4:30 PM), the emotional situation is completely different: YB is reeling after two painful defeats. On Thursday, the Bernese were eliminated as defending champions in the quarter-finals of the cup by FC Sion from the lower division (1:2). It was the match in which there should have been a response to the 0-1 defeat in the top match against Servette a week ago.
And for the team from Zurich, apart from Wednesday’s cup match against Winterthur (0-2), all championship dreams have long been a thing of the past. Since jumping to the top of the table, FCZ has collected a paltry nine points in ten games and scored just seven goals; they are numbers of a relegation candidate.
Only the two clubs from Lausanne have a weaker record in this phase. Thanks to the strong preliminary round, the FCZ is not in danger of relegation. If another bankruptcy occurs, Zurich residents risk becoming embroiled in a rent war. It would be another blow in the neck after the weak performance in the cup.
After all: FCZ only lost one of the last nine matches in the Super League against YB. The Bernese are still leaders, but they feel Servette breathing down their necks.
Thanks to the 2-0 win against St. Gallen, the team from Geneva did their job and moved up to one point. And it has been almost three years since YB last won against FCZ in Letzigrund.
