The expression ‘radiant as a cockchafer’ was probably coined for moments like this. Colton Sceviour (34) cannot hide his joy when he steps outside the dressing room after SCB’s 4-1 win over Lausanne and direct qualification for the play-offs.
The relief can be seen in the. He missed 32 games this season due to various injuries. Most recently due to a sprained ankle, which required the use of crutches and prevented him from training. And in the 18 games he played before the match against Lausanne, he had not scored a single goal. Sceviour was Bern’s second best goalscorer last season with 21 goals.
«Now everything came together. I think I’ve missed more games this season than in my entire career before. It was hard to watch and not be able to help,” Sceviour said. “It was in my head that I didn’t score any goals. Because of the injuries I never got into a good rhythm. And the puck never went in. That created a snowball effect.”
Late, but not too late, the Canadian scored his first goal of the season on Saturday. After a counter-attack, all he had to do was score to make it 2-1, but he almost missed the chance. It’s an important, if simple, goal. ‘That was probably what I needed. I hope this opens the floodgates. It’s nice that I was able to make a positive contribution in an important match.”
What was going through his mind when he scored? “Before that, I just thought: don’t miss this opportunity!” says Sceviour, laughing. “And then I just felt relief and joy.”
Last season, the former NHL striker scored a very important goal for SCB in Langnau in the penultimate round of matches. “This time it felt even better because I hadn’t scored all season and hadn’t played much.”
His contract in Bern is expiring. What is the future of the veteran? “Last year I was in the same situation and I tried not to focus on it too much.” He will do the same again. “Hopefully there will be a few more months of ice hockey. And then we’ll see what comes next.” The play-offs continue next week. “Once you’re inside, anything is possible,” says Sceviour. Zug or Lausanne now await him and SCB in the quarter-finals.
