These are real ups and downs for Stefan Luitz. Firstly, the German fell before the start of the season, broke his right ankle and tore his syndesmosis ligament. Then the private happiness: on New Year’s Day, the 31-year-old announced that he would become a father for the second time.
Then follows the next descent in the roller coaster season. A few days after the baby news, Luitz took part in the first race of the winter in Adelboden, but was unable to qualify for the second run of the giant slalom. The same goes for the subsequent events in Schladming, Bansko and most recently Palisades Tahoe.
The result: Luitz drops out of the top 60 in the giant slalom rankings and has also fallen to 167th on the FIS points list. The result: the Bavarian will not be eligible to start for the two giant slaloms in Aspen on Friday and Saturday (from 6 p.m. on Blick), the Skinews portal reports.
“No more races in Aspen for me,” Luitz, who won his only World Cup victory to date in Beaver Creek in 2018, wrote on his Instagram profile. The second sentence reads somewhat cryptically: “Let’s see how the journey continues…”
This season’s journey is now over. The FIS ranking is valid until March 13 and therefore he is not eligible for the giant slalom in Kranjska Gora (Slo). And at the season finale in Saalbach-Hinterglemm (Austria), only the best 25 of the World Cup rankings are allowed to start. (ch)
