Rotting game for team boss Horner: Bull power struggle as mud fight

The question currently on Formula 1’s mind: Who wants to trip Christian Horner?
Roger Benoit from Bahrain

Before the third practice and the floodlit qualifying here in Bahrain (5 p.m. CET, TV live), the mysterious affair remains the topic. The new topic of conversation is the email sent on Thursday to the media people, team bosses and important general practitioners who have been accredited for 2024.

Thailand vs Austria

A link takes you to Horner’s chat with an internal employee who filed a complaint and provided it as evidence. That is why there was an external investigation, which ended with a thin explanation from Thailand.

It is therefore clear that the Thai majority shareholder with 51 percent (and very close to Horner) used its power against the parent company in Salzburg. There, CEO Oliver Mintzlaff (formerly RB Leipzig) and motorsport advisor Helmut Marko have become even closer. It is now also about the damaged reputation of the house that gives wings.

Will Mercedes catch Verstappen?

But this duo is not behind an annoying action that will certainly be continued. The Verstappen clan will be in the spotlight – but what interest would the Dutch have?

If the unloved Horner were gone, a possible sensational transfer to Mercedes would also be torpedoed. With Horner at the control desk you would certainly get away faster.

At Sauber you have to keep quiet

The poor statement of a fair and thorough negotiation process with a fair ‘acquittal’ (without specifying what exactly Horner was accused of) also brought two team CEOs into action: Mercedes-Wolff (really no friend of Horner): ‘So a Global sport needs transparency. And we miss them all!” McLaren-Brown: “A report like this opens the door to many questions, rumors and speculation. And that harms our sport, because the end is not yet in sight.”

At Sauber, CEO Andreas Seidl (also not a friend of Horner) banned all his employees from speaking externally about the matter. A very sensible attitude.

Where do the email addresses come from?

So who’s interested in this mudslinging? When sending the emails with screenshots and photos (apparently from the hours-long investigation), it will not be possible to identify the anonymous source. But who could access the approximately 100 current email addresses so easily?

Anyone who has made use of this now receives mail from Horner’s lawyers. So it can be assumed that the documents in the globally distributed email are genuine.
