These five former sports stars can finally celebrate their birthday again

1. Marek Lesniak
The Polish former footballer played for Bayer Leverkusen and Neuchâtel-Xamax in the 1996/97 season. After his retirement he became a coach in the German amateur leagues. He was born in 1964.

2. Milaim Rama
The former footballer was the first Kosovar native to play for our national team, including at the 2004 European Championships. He spent most of his career at FC Thun. Nowadays he works for an insurance company. He was born in 1976.

3. Cagdas Atan
The Turkish former footballer, born in 1980, celebrated his greatest successes at FC Basel: champion in 2010 and 2011 and cup winner in 2011. Atan has been coaching FK Basaksehir in the Turkish Süper Lig since this season.

4. Cam department
The Canadian former ice hockey goalkeeper, born in 1984, played in the NHL between 2005 and 2019. In 2007 he became world champion with Canada and in 2006 he won the Stanley Cup with the Carolina Hurricanes (with goalkeeper Martin Gerber).

5. Benedikt Höwedes
The German former footballer spent most of his career at Schalke. In 2014 he even became world champion. After his time as an active player, he was, among other things, team manager of the German national team. He was born in 1988.

David vs. Goliath

He will probably never forget the leap year 2004 as long as he lives. That was the case on February 29 of that year Davide Chiumiento his debut for Juventus Turin. The then only 19-year-old came on after an hour for Alessandro Del Piero. But unfortunately the Appenzell region was never really able to assert itself afterwards. He played only fifteen games in Serie A and later returned to Switzerland via France.

That’s how long it’s been since February 29, 2016 Hannes Lohr died. The German footballer became champion and cup winner with 1. FC Köln and became top scorer in the Bundesliga in 1968. As a coach he won Olympic bronze with Germany in 1988.

In the last leap year he caused a lot of joy from the perspective of Swiss sports fans: on February 29, 2020 Mauro Caviezel took second place at the Super-G in Hinterstoder. The race was won by Vincent Kriechmayr and a certain Marco Odermatt finished 14th.
