Two years of suffering: SCB professional Lehmann is finally back to work

If you want to treat one player to a successful time, it is Marco Lehmann (24). For two years he had to endure bad conditions. While playing for the SCRJ Lakers, he suffered from concussion for a long time and last season he played only four games for SCB. A viral illness he contracted in Crete caused extensive damage to the Zurich Oberlander’s stomach and intestines. He almost despaired and lost ten kilos in the process; Top sport was no longer an option.

But this season Lehmann is back in full swing and has developed into one of the top players at SCB, which “is a satisfaction”, as he says. He has scored six times in the last seven games. With 13 goals and 17 assists, he is the second best scorer at SCB after Kahun.

For example, in the difficult times, Lehmann has learned a lot to look at his work as a hockey professional with different eyes, without losing his bite. “I had to learn to approach everything more relaxed,” says Lehmann. If things don’t go well, he thinks back.

Grandmother made extraordinary neck protection

What stands out about Lehmann is his enormous speed. On Blick’s last training visit, he reached, as he often does, the team’s top speed of 33.89 km/h. Is he the fastest player in the competition? “I don’t know. There are a lot of fast players.”

Lehmann also has to answer the question why he is so fast. What may have helped him was the fact that during his youth at EHC Wetzikon he worked on his skating technique with a figure skating instructor two to three times a week.

During this time, Lehmann slept in SCB bedding and his nursery was wallpapered with Martin Plüss & Co posters. How does a boy from Zurich become an SCB fan? “That comes from my grandparents, who have a connection with Bern and took me to SCB matches at an early age.”

It was also his grandmother who turned Lehmann into an exceptional neck protector after the tragic death of Nottingham striker Adam Johnson. Because he doesn’t want to be confined below his neck, he wears a band made of cut-resistant material. So you recognize him immediately.

Nati coach Fischer compares Lehmann with Ambühl

Nati coach Patrick Fischer compared the 1.75 meter short and now 75 kilo striker in terms of player type with the HCD evergreen Andres Ambühl (40). “I was able to talk to him in the national team. It’s fascinating what he shows at his age. He’s also a fast player, but he’s 10 or 15 kilos heavier than me. “My goal is to gain weight,” says Lehmann.

Another player he is looking for is Plüss, who was his advisor before starting as sports director at SCB in May. “These are players I try to copy things from. Then I’ll see if it works for me too.” For example, the striker, who studied business administration and sports together with his brother, Thurgau striker Nico (22), pays attention to how his role models behave in the corners.

If Lehmann stays healthy, he should continue to improve after his best season so far and not only the SCB, but also national coach Fischer will continue to enjoy the rocket. But for now, the Bernese team is all about securing a place in the play-offs.
