For Winti’s magical foot Matteo Di Giusto (23), the cup quarter-final against FCZ is not like any other match. “There are many points that make the game special,” he admits bluntly in an interview with Blick.

Three reasons come to mind for Di Giusto. “It’s Cup, that alone is special enough,” he says at the beginning. He also mentions his past as an FCZ junior and his brother Nevio Di Giusto (18), who is almost five years younger, is in the Zurich selection and only made his professional debut in Lugano three days ago.

Are they on the field at the same time?

“I was probably more nervous than him,” says Di Giusto, who watched his brother’s debut as closely as possible before his own match in Lausanne. “I called him on our drive home and told him how proud I was of him. He told me he was calm. But I didn’t buy it from him.”

Things should look different on Wednesday evening. Especially if the brothers were on the field at the same time. But then there are other, much more important thoughts. In November they were affected by the unexpected death of their mother. “Of course we would dedicate this moment to her. She contributed to all this,” says Di Giusto.

“Of course the FCZ has a special status”

Just like Nevio, Matteo also started his career at FCZ. Via Freiburg and Vaduz he came to Winterthur in the summer of 2022, where he found happiness. “The decision to leave the FCZ at the time was the right one,” he reflects. Does he dream of returning? “Of course the club has a special status. But at the moment I don’t think about it.” These are currently full at Winterthur.

While the residents of Eulachstadt have started the new year successfully, things are not going as planned for Di Giusto in 2024. He still has zero goals. “So it’s time to change that,” he says with a smile. He knows very well how to hurt the FCZ. “FCZ Junior hurts old love,” Blick headlined on February 7, 2021, when he came on as a substitute for FC Vaduz in the 76th minute and scored the winning goal two minutes later to make the score 3-2. He would like to do it again. To the sorrow of Brother Nevio.
