A day after it was announced that Max Eberl (50) would become the new sports director of FC Bayern Munich, he appeared in the media for the first time in this role.
His top priority for his role with the German record champions is trophy hunting. “I am here to win titles,” Eberl said during his introduction at the Allianz Arena.
Due to the difficult season, FC Bayern finds itself “in the unusual role of hunter, but in the remaining three months of the season it is now important to make the most of it.” Then, says Eberl, “there might be another title to be won – we don’t know.”
At the same time, he emphasizes that he is not a savior. “I am a boy who wants to be involved and can and wants to work very well in a team.” The list of outstanding tasks is long. “It is best to start looking for a coach as quickly as possible,” but still with sufficient thoroughness. “There are many names in the room, but we will think about it in peace.”
He will have a lot of discussions because there will also be changes in the selection. Because: “We have to find the right coach for Bayern Munich and the players who fit Bayern Munich and then also the coach.” He is confident that the right pieces of the puzzle will be found for the 2024/2025 season.
Chairman Herbert Hainer emphasized that FC Bayern “not only needs the best players on the field, but also in the management team so that we can achieve our ambitious goals.”
Bayern officially signed Eberl at the supervisory board meeting on Monday, giving him a contract until 2027. The former Munich professional will take up office on March 1. Eberl is only the third sporting director in the club’s history, after Hasan Salihamidzic and Matthias Sammer (2012 to 2016). FC Bayern will reportedly pay a transfer fee of 4.5 million euros to Eberl’s former club RB Leipzig; the new strong man previously worked successfully for Borussia Mönchengladbach for several years.
