Garmisch-Partenkirchen, February 27, 2022: Alexander Khoroshilov proves at the World Cup Slalom on Gudiberg that he can make very fast turns even at the age of 38. The Russian improved from 22nd to 14th in the second lap.

Despite this remarkable achievement, the great triumphant of the 2015 Schladming Slalom disappeared from the big World Cup podium shortly afterwards. Reason: Russian President Vladimir Putin (71) started the war of aggression against Ukraine three days before the Garmisch Slalom. The FIS will then ban the Russian athletes in March 2022.

Ski equipment suppliers make an exception

Since then, the Russian top players have been competing against each other in the Russian Cup in their home country. And even though Khoroshilov celebrated his fortieth birthday on February 16, he is still going strong.

“Alexander dominates this series together with Pavel Trichitschew, who finished second in the combination in Wengen in 2018, and Ivan Kuznetsov,” says Austrian Wolfgang Mitter (70), who was manager of the Russian alpine team until the start of the war.

Siegfried Voglreiter, race director of the Upper Austrian ski manufacturer Fischer, even made an exception for Khoroshilov: “After the outbreak of war, we canceled all contracts with Russian athletes. Of course we no longer have a contract with Khoroshilov. But because he is a very likeable and completely apolitical person, I still equip him with our racing skis. Especially since he has been fishing since he was a child.”

Good money in the Russian Cup

Some insiders believe that Khoroshilov only entered the Russian Cup in his old age to avoid being sent to the war front as a member of the CSKA Moscow army sports club. But Wolfgang Mitter thinks there is more of a commercial reason: “The Russia Cup comes with considerable prize money. Alexander can make good money here.”

Outfitter Voglreiter also knows that the Cup is not a fun event: “I recently saw video footage of the Russia Cup. It almost looked more professional than the footage of World Cup races.”
